TEMPE, Ariz. – The Undie Run at Arizona State University has become a popular tradition.

In 2011, more than 20,000 people took part in the event, but with all those runners comes some problems and expenses. Now it’s in danger of being shut down.

The students who organize it need money to pay for security guards and other expenses — and if they don’t get the money, it pay not happen.

At the end of every spring semester, ASU students strip down and show off, all in the name of charity. The clothes left behind are donated.

But keeping thousands of students in line and preventing anything from going wrong costs money.

“We’re way behind where we should be,” says organizer Kayla Frost. “Every year it’s grown… that requires a lot of security.”

Last year, a well-publicized brawl tarnished the charity run’s reputation.

“I feel like that got way overblown. You could say it’s an even to run around in your underwear, it’s become a huge established ASU tradition… and also 5 local Arizona charities depend on us for donations at a time where they really need it,” says Frost.

Last year, students donated more than 4 tons of clothing. Organizers admit they need more than $10,000 to make it happen.

An event which draws thousands of ASU students might be in jeopardy this year. It may not happen this year because of security reasons.

The ASU Undie Run has been happening for the last several years. It marked the fact that school is almost out and students could let it all hang out.

“It’s fun, you know, and at the same time you get a little freaky. So it’s great and I think it sums up ASU and the experience here,” said ASU senior Brian Snider.

Natalie Fleming helps organize the run and says it’s all about undressing to dress others.

“At the event, students are able to take the shirts off their back and donate it to local charities,” she said.

Fleming said they donated more than four tons of cloths last year. Nearly 20,000 Sun Devils showed up. But the event is raising some eyebrows after a fight broke out at the run last year. The video of the brawl went viral.

Fleming says the school is recommending the group beefs up security for this year’s run. She says they’re trying to raise at least $10,000 to pay for security and other expenses.

“It is fair to say it’s in danger, we are really working hard to get more sponsorship,” she said.

Some ASU students had mixed feelings about the run.

“I doubt a lot of people are doing it to benefit anyone else, like if you’re going to donate clothes, then donate clothes,” said one ASU student.

“You know this is definitely the time to do it, and we’re the right people to have it done correctly,” said Snider.

TEMPE, Ariz. – On Tuesday night, tens of thousands of students stripped to their underwear to run through the Arizona State University campus.

The Undie Run takes place on the last day of class, and there are bands playing along with other entertainment.

It’s a way for students to unwind before they start cramming for finals – and it also benefits a good cause.

The students donated the clothing they took off to run to benefit charities, including: Arizona Helping Hands, STANDUP FOR KIDS, Central Arizona Shelter Services (CASS), and André House.

This year, the ASU Undie Run partnered with Move for Hunger, a non-profit that helps community food banks primarily by collecting non-perishable food that people don’t want when they’re moving.

To learn more about how food banks work and the need for non-perishable food, the ASU Undie Run and Move For Hunger staff visited St. Mary’s Food Banks in Phoenix. The warehouse was huge, but with so many people in need, the food goes fast.

Don’t forget to bring food to the event along with clothes to donate! Here’s a list of acceptable food items:
