2008 The First Annual ASU Undie Run
The ASU Undie Run tradition started in the spring of 2008, when Rubin Green arrived fresh on the ASU campus with undie-bearing ideas from SDSU in mind. Rubin knew that he wanted to put on an undie run at ASU, but he wanted to make it bigger, better and more memorable than any other run in the nation. So, with a small staff, no budget and a large goal in place, the ASU Undie Run Coaltion set off to put on their first event. The planning process was chaotic, but the night of the event turned out to be a huge success. Over 5,000 students showed up at the Fulton Center on the last day of classes ready to strip off their clothes for a good cause.
After the success of the first ASU Undie Run, it was decided that some expansion was necessary to bring the most memorable end-of-the-year event to more of ASU’s campus. The staff grew significantly, and the planning process began nine months prior to the last day of classes. As the event got closer, the campus buzzed with excitement in anticipation of the second run. Finally, the night of the ASU Undie Run arrived, and over 10,000 students showed up on the SRC field, filling the staff’s view from the stage and an entire U-Haul with their clothing. After two hours of dancing and donating, the students were off on an exhilarating journey around campus in their underwear. The students gathered on the field for the closing ceremonies and then parted ways, bonded forever in the Second Annual ASU Undie Run.
The 2010 ASU Undie Run planning process began with high standards in mind. The staff already knew that they had an amazing event in their hands and a population eager to attend, so the primary focus was in providing students with an unforgettable evening of philanthropy and fun. Fourteen sponsors were recruited to ensure the success of 2010 event. The day of the ASU Undie Run was frenzied, with staff members running between classes and finals while dealing with last-minute changes, sponsorship communications and production set-up. Once the evening began, the effort was proven well worth it. Over 15,000 ASU students showed up to donate over two and a half tons of clothing to charity. At 10pm with music and adrenaline pumping through their veins, the 2010 ASU Undie Run attendees lined up to complete what the entire event was created for: the run. The ASU Undie Run staff watched as the incredible 15,000 students took off and shortly trickled back to the SRC fields as a mass of excitement and underwear. The event ended with an introduction of the new ASU Undie Run President, and everyone left the field, already excited for more to come.
The fourth annual ASU Undie Run process is already well underway! Be ready for an even larger event that will be remembered in ASU Undie Run history for years to come. The new 2011 staff is excited to once again bring students together for a festival of philanthropy, liberation, Sun Devil pride and of course, underwear, in the 2011 ASU Undie Run!
